Classic Lasagna

October 1, 2024 by Shelly Leave a Comment

Classic lasagna is the epitome of hearty, comforting Italian cuisine. This beloved dish features layers of rich, savory ingredients baked to perfection. The traditional recipe combines sheets of tender pasta with a flavorful meat sauce, creamy béchamel or ricotta, and a generous layer of melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
Each bite delivers a satisfying blend of flavors—from the robust, tomatoey meat sauce to the smooth, creamy cheese layers. The oven-baking process melds these components together into a delicious, cohesive dish with a beautifully golden crust.
Ideal for family dinners, special gatherings, or cozy nights in, classic lasagna offers both comfort and indulgence. Its layers of goodness and rich flavors make it a timeless favorite that continues to delight and satisfy.

Ingredients:

  • For the Meat Sauce:
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 pound ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
    • 1 onion, finely chopped
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
    • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
    • 1 cup water or beef broth
    • 1 teaspoon dried basil
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)
  • For the Cheese Mixture:
    • 1 cup ricotta cheese
    • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
    • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley or basil
  • For Assembly:
    • 12 lasagna noodles
    • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (for layering and topping)
    • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce:
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
    • Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
    • Add chopped onion and garlic, and cook until the onion is translucent.
    • Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water or beef broth, basil, oregano, thyme, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).
    • Simmer the sauce for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  2. Prepare the Cheese Mixture:
    • In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, shredded mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, egg, and chopped parsley or basil. Mix well.
  3. Cook the Lasagna Noodles:
    • Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and lay the noodles flat on a parchment-lined baking sheet to prevent sticking.
  4. Assemble the Lasagna:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
    • Place a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce.
    • Spread a layer of the cheese mixture over the noodles.
    • Add another layer of meat sauce on top of the cheese mixture.
    • Repeat the layers, ending with a layer of noodles and meat sauce.
    • Sprinkle the remaining shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.
  5. Bake the Lasagna:
    • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
    • Let the lasagna cool for about 10-15 minutes before serving to help it set.

Tips:

  • Make Ahead: Lasagna can be assembled a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Bake as directed, adding an extra 10-15 minutes if baking straight from the fridge.
  • Vegetarian Option: Replace the meat with sautéed vegetables (e.g., mushrooms, spinach, zucchini) for a hearty vegetarian lasagna.
  • Freezing: Lasagna can be frozen before baking. Cover tightly with foil and freeze for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen, adding about 30-40 minutes to the cooking time.

Enjoy this classic, comforting lasagna as a family favorite or for a special occasion!
