Classic Hot Chocolate

October 6, 2024 by Shelly Leave a Comment

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups milk (whole milk or any preferred variety)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows, for topping (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Cocoa Mixture:
    • In a small saucepan, combine the cocoa powder, sugar, and a pinch of salt.
    • Stir in the water and heat over medium heat, whisking constantly until the mixture starts to bubble and is well combined. This step creates a smooth chocolate paste.
  2. Add Milk:
    • Slowly pour in the milk while continuing to whisk. Heat the mixture, but do not let it boil. Stir frequently until the hot chocolate is hot and steamy.
  3. Add Chocolate:
    • Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate to the mixture. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted and the hot chocolate is smooth.
  4. Add Vanilla:
    • Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Serve:
    • Pour the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows, if desired.
  6. Optional:
    • For extra flavor, you can add a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg on top, or mix in a tablespoon of flavored syrup like caramel or peppermint.

Tips:

  • Chocolate: For a richer flavor, use high-quality chocolate and adjust the amount based on your taste preference.
  • Milk: For a creamier texture, consider using half-and-half or adding a splash of heavy cream.
  • Sweetness: Adjust the sugar according to your taste or use alternatives like honey or maple syrup.

Enjoy your homemade hot chocolate, perfect for cozying up by the fire or sipping after a day of winter activities!
