Classic Hamburger

October 1, 2024 by Shelly Leave a Comment

The classic hamburger is a quintessential American favorite that perfectly balances simplicity and flavor. At its core, this beloved sandwich features a juicy beef patty seasoned to perfection, grilled or pan-fried to your desired level of doneness. It’s typically served on a soft, toasted bun with a selection of traditional toppings such as crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, pickles, and sliced onions.
The beauty of the classic hamburger lies in its versatility. Customize your burger with your favorite condiments—ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise—or add cheese for a deliciously melty touch. Whether you prefer it with bacon, sautéed mushrooms, or a fried egg, the classic hamburger can be tailored to suit any taste.
Perfect for a casual meal, backyard barbecues, or a quick and satisfying dinner, the classic hamburger remains a timeless and universally loved choice. Its combination of a well-cooked patty, fresh toppings, and a soft bun makes it a staple of American cuisine.

Ingredients:

  • For the Patties:
    • 1 pound ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat for juiciness)
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
    • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional for added flavor)
  • For the Burger Assembly:
    • 4 hamburger buns
    • Lettuce leaves
    • Tomato slices
    • Pickles
    • Sliced onions
    • Sliced cheese (cheddar, American, or your choice)
    • Ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise (or your favorite condiments)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Patties:
    • In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce (if using). Avoid over-mixing to keep the patties tender.
    • Divide the meat into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 3/4 inch thick. Press a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent it from puffing up too much during cooking.
  2. Cook the Patties:
    • Grilling: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Grill the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or longer if you prefer them more well-done. Add a slice of cheese during the last minute of cooking if desired.
    • Pan-Frying: Heat a skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or longer if you prefer them more well-done. Add a slice of cheese during the last minute of cooking if desired.
  3. Toast the Buns:
    • During the last few minutes of cooking the patties, you can toast the hamburger buns on the grill or in a separate skillet until lightly golden.
  4. Assemble the Burgers:
    • Spread condiments of your choice (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise) on the bottom half of each bun.
    • Place a cooked patty on each bun, then top with lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, and onions.
    • Add a slice of cheese if desired.
    • Spread additional condiments on the top half of the bun, then place it on top of the burger.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the burgers immediately with your favorite side dishes like fries, coleslaw, or a simple salad.

Tips:

  • Meat Choice: Use ground beef with a higher fat content (around 20%) for juicy, flavorful burgers. If you prefer leaner meat, you can use ground turkey or chicken.
  • Seasoning: Adjust the seasoning according to your taste. Feel free to experiment with other spices or herbs.
  • Doneness: Use a meat thermometer if you want to be precise about doneness. The USDA recommends an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for ground beef.

Enjoy these classic hamburgers at your next cookout or family dinner!
